I entered the Decorative Exhibit category in the Cake International competition, albeit very last minute. Unfortunately, only gave myself a week to complete the piece.. After working on it day and night I completed it at 11.30 pm the night before the exhibition.
It is an 8″ dummy cake cut into the shape of a cushion, coated in sugarpaste and then airbrushed in purple. Base board covered in purple sugarpaste and second board mounted on top. This was also coated in purple sugarpaste and then given a design using a textured roller. Both cake boards trimmed with gold ribbon. I mixed sugarpaste and mexican paste in ivory and rolled into a square for the fabric piece and placed on the cushion. Butterflies were made from gelatin for the wings and mexican paste for the bodies. The open egg also made from mexican paste and airbrushed with purple, gold leaves attached to outer for detail. mexican pasted rolled, painted gold and folded into the egg to act as fabric. Gold beading added around edge of egg to finish. A smaller cushion made from modelling paste and airbrushed purple, attached to centre. Ivory coloured rose made from platinum paste and petals edged in gold.
When the judges had completed their task, I returned to my exhibit to find I had been awarded silver. What an exciting day!
